What to know
- 01
Active acne, marks and scars are different concerns
Acne can include clogged pores, blackheads, whiteheads and inflamed spots. Flat red or brown marks left after a breakout are not always scars. Indented or raised scars involve changes in skin texture. These concerns can occur together, but they do not necessarily need the same care.
- 02
What contributes to acne and scarring?
Acne develops through a combination of blocked follicles, oil production, bacteria and inflammation. Hormonal changes, some medications and skin or hair products may contribute. Acne is not simply a sign of poor hygiene. Deep inflammation and picking or squeezing spots can increase the risk of scarring.
- 03
When medical care comes first
Painful, deep, persistent or worsening breakouts, ongoing scarring, or acne affecting your wellbeing warrant assessment by a physician or dermatologist. Cosmetic treatments do not replace medical acne care. If the diagnosis is uncertain, seek medical assessment before booking a procedure.
- 04
Skin care, facials and chemical peels
A manageable skin-care routine and broad-spectrum sun protection can support care for acne-prone skin and post-breakout marks. At Skin Diva, a facial or chemical peel may be considered for selected concerns such as congestion or uneven tone after assessment. These treatments are not appropriate for every breakout and are not a substitute for medical treatment of inflammatory acne.
- 05
Microneedling for selected acne scars
Once active acne is controlled, microneedling may be considered for some indented acne scars. Suitability depends on scar type, skin tone, healing history and current skin condition. It is not performed over active inflamed acne or an infection. Raised scars and deeper or tethered scars may need medical assessment or treatments outside the services offered here.
- 06
What your first assessment involves
Your provider will ask about breakouts, scarring, previous treatments, medications, skin care and how your skin heals. Mention recent sun exposure, a history of raised scars and any current or recent prescription acne treatment. Together, you can discuss whether cosmetic care is appropriate, possible risks, downtime, costs and next steps. Do not stop prescribed medication without advice from the clinician who prescribed it.
- 07
Set realistic expectations
No treatment is best for everyone, and results are not guaranteed. Individual results vary. Acne can recur, and scar treatment does not erase every mark or restore completely unscarred skin. More than one appointment may be discussed, but a fixed number cannot promise an outcome. Depending on the procedure, risks include irritation, infection, pigment changes and additional scarring. Your provider should explain the risks relevant to your skin before treatment.
