What to know
- 01
Lines at rest and lines with expression
Some lines appear mainly when you smile, frown or raise your eyebrows. Others remain at rest or reflect surface texture and volume changes. One procedure does not address all of these concerns in the same way.
- 02
What contributes to fine lines?
Age-related changes in collagen and elasticity, repeated movement, sun exposure, smoking and genetics contribute to wrinkles. Dryness can make surface lines more visible. Wrinkles are a common part of ageing and do not require cosmetic treatment.
- 03
When to see a physician
A new or changing skin lesion, a sore that does not heal, bleeding or persistent irritation should be medically assessed rather than treated as an ageing concern. Sudden facial weakness or drooping needs urgent medical attention. Cosmetic procedures should not delay investigation.
- 04
Options for movement-related lines
Neuromodulator treatment may be discussed for selected expression-related lines after a clinical assessment. Suitability depends on medical history, anatomy and the intended treatment area. It does not address every crease, remove excess skin or replace care for sun damage.
- 05
Options for skin texture
Microneedling or chemical peels may be considered for selected texture concerns. Skin care and broad-spectrum sun protection also have a role in ongoing care. Skin sensitivity, pigmentation risk and healing history help determine whether a procedure is appropriate; combining treatments is not automatically necessary.
- 06
What your first assessment involves
Your provider will review lines at rest and during movement, skin condition, medical history, medications and previous treatments. Discuss your priorities and acceptable downtime, then ask about alternatives, risks, costs and follow-up. Tell your provider about pregnancy, breastfeeding or any condition affecting muscle or nerve function.
- 07
Set realistic expectations
No treatment is best for everyone, and results are not guaranteed. Individual results vary. Lines may remain visible, and treatment does not stop ageing. Neuromodulator risks include bruising, asymmetry and temporary eyelid or brow drooping; rare serious effects require urgent care. Peels and microneedling can cause irritation, infection, pigment changes or scarring. Discuss procedure-specific risks and how to seek help before proceeding.
