What to know
- 01
Facial redness is not always rosacea
Rosacea is a chronic inflammatory skin condition that may involve flushing, persistent redness, visible vessels or acne-like bumps. Irritation, eczema and other conditions can look similar. Redness may be less obvious on darker skin, where warmth, stinging and changes in skin colour can also be important.
- 02
What contributes to flushing and flare-ups?
The causes of rosacea are complex. Sun exposure, heat, cold, alcohol, spicy food or stress can trigger symptoms for some people, but triggers differ. A record of symptoms and exposures may help a clinician assess the pattern. Rosacea is not caused by poor hygiene.
- 03
When to see a physician
Persistent or unexplained redness, recurring bumps, skin thickening or symptoms that are worsening need medical assessment. Gritty, dry or inflamed eyes can accompany rosacea. Eye pain, light sensitivity or vision changes need prompt medical attention rather than a cosmetic appointment.
- 04
Gentle skin care comes first
A gentle cleanser, moisturizer and broad-spectrum sun protection may help support a sensitive skin barrier. Avoid scrubbing or adding multiple active products during a flare. A facial is not a treatment for every type of redness; exfoliation, heat or fragranced products may aggravate sensitive skin.
- 05
Considering IPL for selected concerns
IPL photofacial treatment may be considered for selected visible vessels or persistent redness after assessment. It does not cure rosacea or replace prescribed care. Skin tone, recent tanning, light-sensitive medications and the current level of inflammation affect suitability. Treatment may be deferred or declined when risks outweigh potential benefit.
- 06
What your first assessment involves
Discuss when redness began, triggers, eye symptoms, previous diagnoses, medications and reactions to skin care. Your provider will review skin tone, sun exposure and treatment history, then explain whether cosmetic care is appropriate, likely downtime, risks and cost. Do not stop prescribed treatment without advice from the clinician who prescribed it.
- 07
Set realistic expectations
No treatment is best for everyone, and results are not guaranteed. Individual results vary. Redness may persist or recur, and ongoing medical care and trigger management may still be needed. IPL can cause temporary redness or swelling, burns, pigment changes and, less commonly, scarring. Discuss these risks and the limits of treatment before proceeding.
