Start with an individual assessment

What to know

  1. 01

    Understanding volume loss and jowls

Volume loss may appear as hollowing or reduced fullness. Jowls describe tissue that hangs below the jawline. Adding volume and addressing loose skin are different goals; placing filler does not necessarily improve jowls and can add unwanted heaviness.

  2. 02

    Why facial contours change

Age-related changes in fat, bone support, collagen and skin elasticity can alter facial contours. Genetics, sun exposure and weight changes also contribute. These are common changes, not conditions that everyone needs to treat.

  3. 03

    When medical assessment comes first

New unexplained facial swelling, a lump, pain or rapid one-sided change warrants medical assessment before cosmetic care. Sudden facial drooping, especially with weakness or speech changes, needs emergency care. Cosmetic assessment cannot establish the cause of these symptoms.

  4. 04

    Considering dermal fillers

Dermal fillers may be considered for selected areas of volume loss after assessment. They do not remove excess skin or replace a surgical lift. The plan should consider facial proportions and whether adding volume would help or worsen fullness. Choosing not to treat is a reasonable option.

  5. 05

    Considering skin resurfacing

Skin resurfacing, including fractional radiofrequency where appropriate, may be discussed for texture or selected mild laxity concerns. It does not replace lost structural support or reliably correct pronounced jowls. More marked tissue descent may warrant a consultation with an appropriately qualified surgical specialist.

  6. 06

    What your first assessment involves

Discuss your concerns, weight changes, medical history, medications and previous injections or procedures. Your provider will review facial movement, volume and skin quality, explain alternatives and discuss cost, recovery and risks. Bring details of any previous filler if available.

  7. 07

    Set realistic expectations

No treatment is best for everyone, and results are not guaranteed. Individual results vary. Non-surgical treatment cannot promise a lifted jawline or a particular facial shape. Filler effects are temporary; risks include bruising, swelling, lumps, infection and rare vascular blockage that can cause tissue injury or vision loss. Resurfacing carries risks including burns, pigment changes and scarring. Ask about procedure-specific warning signs and follow-up care.
